The authors of the study set out to determine the effectiveness of chlorine dioxide in potable water systems for Legionella control in an acute care hospital environment. Johns Hopkins Hospital established a Legionella task force to develop and implement prevention and control measures to minimize the risk of nosocomial Legionella and to control and eliminate Legionella in the hospital potable water systems.

Data collected confirmed that Chlorine dioxide is safe and effective in controlling and eliminating Legionella, other pathogenic bacteria and bio-film.
